UNESCO ASSIGNS MOUNT ETNA AND TWELVE MEDICI VILLAS WORLD HERITAGE STATUS

DURING UNESCO’S 37TH SESSION THAT TOOK PLACE IN CAMBODIA , THE UNITED NATIONS CULTURE BODY HA DECLARED MOUNT ETNA, ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST ACTIVE VOLCANOS WORLD HERITAGE SITE.

TOGETHER WITH MOUNT ETNA ALSO TWELVE VILLAS AND PLEASURE GARDENS SPREAD ACROSS THE TUSCAN COUNTRY SIDE HAVE GAINED THE WOLRD HERITAGE STATUS.THIS IS BRINGING TO 19 THE TOTAL OF SITES ADDED DURING THIS SESSION WHICH ENDS ON THE 27TH OF JUNE. VERY GOOD NEWS FOR ITALY BUT ALSO FOR THOSE WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT ITALY’S CULTURE AND NATURAL BEAUTY.

MOUNT ETNA IS PART OF A GROUP OF FOUR OTHER NATURAL SITES THAT HAVE BEEN SELECTED DURING THIS EDITION. At 3,329 metres in height, Etna is the tallest active volcano on the European continent. ACCORDING TO UNESCO IT HAS BEEN “one of the world’s longest documented records of historical volcanism”

Situated near Catania, Sicily’s second city, there are still periodic eruptions from Etna’s central crater and lava flows down the sides of the volcano have sometimes put nearby villages at risk.REGARDING the Medici Villas and gardens – according to UNESCO they bear testimony to the influence the Medici family exerted over modern European culture through its patronage of the arts. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, they represent an innovative system of rural construction in harmony with nature and dedicated to leisure, the arts and knowledge.

Their gardens and integration into the natural environment helped develelop the appreciation of both Humanism and the Renaissance.Among the sites that have gained world heritage status there are also THE BEAUTIFUL Boboli Gardens.LOCATED IN FLORENCE ON the hill behind the Pitti Palace THEY HAVE BECOME one of the largest and most elegant Italian style gardens

AT THE MOMENT THE WORLD HERITAGE LIST INCLUDES A TOTAL OF 981 PROPERTIES AND ITALY WITH 49 OF THEM STANDS OUT AS THE COUNTRY WITH THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF SITES.
